Chapter 02 - The Estate
The castle, the home of the Alfieri
The landscape is dominated by the castle, built from 1696 to 1721 by the engineer Antonio Bertola, but rejuvenated in the 19th century, thanks to the neo-Baroque makeover by the architect Ernesto Melano.
The elegant orangery overlooks the inner courtyard, containing the busts of the castle's most illustrious guests and, during the winter, the fragrant citrus trees.
Finally, surrounding the entire property in a broad embrace is the magnificent park, dominating this timeless place.
The park, a witness of style
Oaks, linden trees, cedars and an Andalusian fir: the park, the Romantic heart of the castle of San Martino Alfieri.
The English Garden dates back to 1815 and is the work of the landscape architect Xavier Kurten (1769-1840).
But what is an English garden?
In the 19th century, a simple walk in the park was transformed into an experience full of mystery. And this is what still happens today to those who get lost in the lanes and paths in the “green heart” of the castle.
In the San Martino Alfieri park, Xavier Kurten planted his evergreen signature: a single Andalusian fir.
